On October 13, 2012 in St. Joseph’s High School gymnasium, the Redemptorists at St. Mary’s (Fr. Mick, Fr. Ciro and I) played in the Bishop’s Cup Basketball Tournament against the Youth of Saskatoon. It was a blast! Below is an article which can be found on the Diocese of Saskatoon’s Youth Ministry website. Be sure to check out the YouTube video link at the end of the article!
After going 0-2 the first two years, the clergy finally broke through to win their first Bishop’s Cup Basketball Tournament!
Although billed as going to be a tight fought game, it turned out to be a blowout. The youth played their hearts and souls out – but it wasn’t to be a three peat this year. Great sportsmanship from youth and clergy throughout, but on the court “no mercy within mercy within mercy” was the name of the game (sorry Bishop for the pun). It was obvious from the start Bishop Bolen and his contingent of clergy (and seminarian) were ready and up to the task. Although disappointed, the youth laid everything on the line and can leave proud of their effort. More than anything, it was a wonderful night of laughter, fun, and healthy competition. Now, as they say, we have a true rivalry.
It has to be noted that the clergy’s inspired effort was lead by their honorary coach and teammate playing on one good leg – Fr. Mick Fleming, C.Ss.R. From Fr. Mick’s coaching, to Fr. Johnny’s scoring prowess, to Bishop’s tough defence, to the cheering, laughter and crowd pleasing from Fr. Gregory Roth, the clergy were at the top of their game! Congrats to them!
I’ll miss the cup sitting in my office on behalf of the youth as it now resides at St. Patrick’s with seminarian Greg Smith-Windsor. But all is not lost… stay tuned as we might just take this rematch to the field in the spring time. Details TBA.
