On February 14, His Holiness Pope Francis has appointed Reverend Father Charles Duval, C.Ss.R., currently Parish Priest of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Grande Prairie, Alberta, and the 1st Provincial Superior of the Redemptorist Province of Canada, as Coadjutor Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Grouard-McLennan.
As Coadjutor Archbishop, he will assist the current Archbishop of Grouard-McLennan, the Most Reverend Gerard Pettipas, C.Ss.R., and will succeed him upon the acceptance of his resignation by the Holy Father. He will be ordained to the Episcopate on May 14, 2025.
Father Charles was born on April 12, 1964 in Hull (Gatineau), Quebec, Canada. He entered the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer on August 18, 1985, and professed solemn vows on July 29, 1989. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Theology from the Université Laval in Quebec. His priestly ordination took place on June 12, 1993, in the church of Notre-Dame-du-Perpétuel-Secours in Sherbrooke.
Father Charles has held several positions in parishes and Redemptorist ministries in Hamilton and Toronto in Ontario, Saint-Agustin-de-Desmaures in Quebec, and Bathurst in New Brunswick. He was also the Vice-Rector of the Shrine of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré (2011-2015) and Provincial Superior of the Province of Sainte-Anne-deBeaupré (2015-2019). In 2019, he was elected the first Provincial Superior of the new Province of Canada, and in 2023, was named Parish Priest and Rector of St. Joseph’s Parish in Grande Prairie in Alberta.
According to the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Archdiocese of Grouard-McLennan has 22 diocesan priests, 18 priests who are members of institutes of consecrated life and societies of apostolic life, 3 women in consecrated life, 2 permanent deacons, and 3 pastoral agents serving a Catholic population of 49,424 in 57 parishes and missions.
